Dear Dr. Foster
Greetings! We have met before. This is Laurel, Gabriel Thompson's mother. We saw you in Boston in 1999. Gabe was diagnosed with Intermediate Uveitis at the age of 6 and was a patient of Dr. Steve Charles for a time. Now he is 16 and is being treated by Dr Nisha Acharya at UCSF, who I believe is your former student. We are happy with Gabriel's care. He is on Methotrexate and recently had a cataract surgery on his right eye. The visual results were not as we had hoped, however; he is only seeing 20/150 in that eye. The left eye sees 20/25. He received post surgical YAG laser surgery in the right eye to remove debris, and still no visual results.
Finally, there is a slight amount of CME in the eye near but not on the fovea. Dr Acharya is suggesting that we may wish to do a Kenalog injection on the slim chance it will help, but she thinks there is foveal atrophy and has no recommended treatment for that.
Dr Foster, I am wondering whether you know of any new treatments for foveal atrophy and if we can expect Gabe to have visual recovery at any point in the future. Although I am happy with Dr Acharya's care, it does not hurt to ask and I know that you are up-to- date on the latest research. Since I want to cover all bases in getting my son the most vision possible in the right eye, I am asking you on the chance that perhaps you have another suggestion or may know something that might contribute to the excellent care he is already receiving from Dr Acharya.
Thank you so much,
Laurel
