Dear Dr. Foster,
My mother is a 72 year old woman. She is completely blind in her right eye and is legally blind in the left. She had cataracts surgery in the left eye. Left
eye also has uveitis. I am not sure of the specifics. She has had uveitis for at least 10 years now. Her first opthamologist actually passed away. She
credits what little sight she has left to him. As a result of his death her care was transferred to another opthamologist that does not seem to have the
knowledge of uveitis as her first doctor did. Depsite my arguments she said she's old and doesn't want to change. I know that her first doctor
trialed her on cyclosporine and then went to a combination of cyclosporine and cellcept. He also gave her different injections in her eye unfortunately I did
not know what these injections were maybe it was methrotraxate. She is now on Cellcept 500mg bid, Pred Forte qid, and Atropine bid; this is what the first
doctor prescribed and she has been continuing it ever since. She is also taking iron supplements 325mg and is getting blood work done every other month. Her
current doctor also recommended her to see a retina specialist. The specialist also gives her injections in her eye on occasions of 'flare up' which
reoccurs almost every 4-6 months. Her current opthamologist does not ask her how her eye is or how it is feeling. I have to ask him how she is doing and all
I get is she looks ok stable. There is now a generic Cellcept on the market. I am concerned about her recieving this because her primary opthamologist is
very unreassuring and her retina specialists said she does not deal with Cellcept and is unaware of its complications. The rheumatologist that her first Dr.
consulted with is unaware of a generic cellcept and my mother no longer sees her but the bloodwork is only being reviewed by the rheumatologist. Her current
opthamologist insists on her using the generic. My mother is a very healthy person the only illnesses she has are the uveitis in her eye and the complications
of Cellcept on her liver. Is it ok for her to continue on a generic Cellcept even though it appears that none of her doctors are very knowledgable of it?
Also, should I seek a specialist for her?
