Dear Dr Foster,
My son is 4 and being successfully treated with a 150mg dose of azathioprine daily, 2.5mg of prednisolone daily and 2 drops daily of flarex. He was on mtx but with no success.
He has a dense cataract in his right eye and little vision as a result.
Our specialist is reluctant to remove the cataract until he has at least 3 months of no activity and even then I understand that there is a huge risk of aggrivating the disease.
My question is do you agree with waiting this long or should we wait for a longer period of remission?
Also how much vision do you think he will get back? we patched his left eye for a long time but as his vision got worse it became near torture for him to wear it. I am concerned about the brain shuting down as he was 3 when he started to lose the vision so how well developed would his brian have been? It has been 12months since he developed the catarct.
The other question I have is about the long term use of the azathioprine? He tolerates his high dose very well and is being monitered with monthly blood test. We have a great pead and opthamologist but would just love to hear your opinion on the long term use of this drug.
Also is the 2.5mg doing any good considering his high dose of azathioprine, I would love to get him off this drug.
Thank again for you speedy replies and also your great website.
regards
Amanda Bell
