I am 65 years old, and have practiced ophthalmology for 30 years. That experience has resulted in many observations, one of which was that tapering immunomodulatory therapy that soon after induction of remission is commonly associated with recurrence of the inflammation: hence the "model" of two years on therapy, without tampering with it, after the eye is quiet on no steroid.

It is common for many doctors to want to reduce medication dosage. After all, the eyes are quiet, and why not reduce the risks of the medicine by cutting back on the dose. Been there; done that. Got away with it sometimes, but lived to regret it so often that I eventually asked myself, "Now, seeing what I have seen, knowing what I know, what would I want done for me if I were in this patient's position? Reduce the dose and take the risk of starting all over again, or stay on track with medication and dosage that clearly works and that I tolerate well?" Besides, your boy is going to be tapering the dose a little on his own by virtue of his growth. If you were REALLY keeping pace with the dose, you'ld be raising it every 3 months to keep up with his growth.
